AEDs allow more people to respond to a medical emergency that requires defibrillation. Because AEDs are portable, they can be used by nonmedical responders (lay people). They can be part of emergency response programs that include rapid response EMS and rapid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). All three measures are critical to improving survival from SCA.
